A very EASY to knit Coat that is perfect for in between weather. Depending on the person or climate, this may be your new winter coat! A simple seed stitch is used, giving the coat plenty of texture and warmth. A contrast yarn is also used now and then, knit in Reverse Stockinette stitch as well as Garter Stitch to provide added interest. If the addition of a contrast yarn and different stitches seem too daunting, instructions are also given for knitting solely in Seed Stitch without a contrast yarn. This is a great sweater for the Advanced Beginner. We offer videos on our website for guidance. The coat is knit on number 11 needles, making for a very quick project!
Seed Stitch – alternating knit and purl stitches
Reverse Stockinette Stitch – Purling one row, knitting one row
Garter Stitch – Knitting every row
Decreasing – Knit 2 together and SSK

We used Peace Fleece Worsted ( 75% wool, 25% mohair) in Father’s Gray 200 yds. along with a strand of Madeline Tosh Sock in Dirty Panther (100% super wash merino wool 395 yds.. (Any sock yarn will work) We combined one strand of each yarn to get the gauge of 3 stitches per inch which in turn adds a little more interest. However, you can choose one yarn in Bulky weight such as Cascade’s Ecological Wool that gets 3 stitches to the inch by itself. This will be a more economical option. If you choose a tweed yarn that gets 3 stitches to the inch, you will add interest without the added cost. For the contrast yarn, as shown in the picture below,I used yarn that I had in my stash,.
Yardage for above mentioned worsted/sock yarn Small 8 skeins/4 skeins , Medium 9 skeins/5 skeins Large 10 skeins/5 skeins X Large 11 skeins/6 skeins Select an additional 200-400 yards of the same gauge for the contrast yarn. I used the same color, just a different shade.
Yardage for selecting a single strand of Bulky yarn that gets 3 stitches per inch: 1600 ( 1800, 2000, 2200 ) Then, 200-400 yards of a contrast yarn of the same gauge. I used the same color, just a different shade.
Again, you can easily knit this Coat without the contrast yarn and different stitches as shown to the right. If that is your preference, simply knit the entire coat in Seed Stitch, disregarding the instructions to switch to a contrast yarn, Garter Stitch and Reverse Stockinette Stitch. This will be noted in the instructions in blue. The yardage will be 200 yards less for each size.
